Sushi.
I love sushi, but I had doubts I could make my own. I have to admit I was intimidated by the idea too. But after a short lesson from my friend I took it on by myself and it was a success! And it was easy!
The part that takes the longest is the rice and I took the easy route of 'set it and forget it' and cooked the rice in the...wait for it...rice cooker. Once the rice was done I sprinkled about a tablespoon of rice vinegar on it to keep it from becoming too sticky.
I cooled the rice completely, but also got the tip that you really don't have to. If the rice is still warm it helps to keep the nori flexible. I did have a little trouble with the nori being a little crispy. Nori, by the way is the seaweed paper that you roll everything up in.
I cut up various veggies and seafood to include in the rolls.
Avocado, carrot, cucumber, and the non-traditional pickled beans Smoked salmon
Chili Paste for a little kick
I did not use a bamboo mat to roll them, I just simply flattened the rice onto the nori, added a combo of ingredients and rolled. Easy Peasy. Then I just cut them into pieces and served.
1st roll was shrimp, cucumber, avocado, and chili paste
2nd roll was smoked salmon, cream cheese and pickled beans (Named this the Vollmer Tavern Roll) This was my favorite.
3rd roll was crab, carrot, avocado
Next time I'll have to get a little more adventurous and graduate to raw tuna or something along those lines. I'll definitely be rolling some more of these lil guys again in my near future.
